About the Brewery

KUSAM Brewery and Tacos is a chill microbrewery in downtown Cozumel. My husband and I ventured there with a couple of our friends while in town for a cruise because we wanted to get away from the crowds flocking to the beaches, shopping venues, and tourist destinations. This establishment was a perfect little hole-in-the-wall to fit that criteria.

While not very big, the brewery has a bright and open atmosphere with a small bar at the very back. There were only five beers on tap, written on a chalkboard menu behind the bar. This is because the batches are so small and experimental that they rarely stay on draft for long or have the exact same beers twice.

Like the beer menu, the food menu is fairly limited as well, but perfect for a snack to go along with their craft brews. We ordered chips with beer cheese and fish tacos, served with an assortment of hot sauces for topping.

Since they served beers in flights of four, we ordered all five in the 5 oz. taster size, paying only a bit more for the fifth one. I absolutely loved the little skull glasses for the tasters and full-sized glassware.

On this particular visit, the owner and brewmaster, Sergio, stopped in to check on a couple of things while we were there and we were able to talk to him about the various beer styles. It was so great listening to him talk about his passion for craft beer which spurred him to open a local brewery.

Always Something New

We have since been back to the brewery multiple times, ordering a flight each time to try all the new flavors. One of my favorites has been the Crystal Ship Double IPA, but I was also pleasantly surprised by Jamaiquin Hard Seltzer made with dried hibiscus flowers, known in Mexico as “jamaica.”

Even though we’ve only returned a handful of times, the bartender recognizes us when we walk in and is always happy to explain the new brews to us and accommodate our sometimes unique requests. Next time you’re looking for a relaxed environment to enjoy locally-made beer, be sure to check out KUSAM.

Cheers!
