Megaton Brewery

On March 30, 2019, yet another new brewery joined the fold of the Houston area craft brew community. While I missed being a part of their soft opening party, I was so excited to have attended the Grand Opening party at Megaton Brewery.

The brewery was designed in steampunk fashion and I came dressed to match. There was a small bar outside with some tables and chairs under a covered driveway, along with cornhole and giant Jenga to play.

The entrance opened up to a vast, industrial indoor space that had a pair of pool tables in one section and arcade games found around the corner. The place was already lively and busy, with a line forming at the bar.

The brewery had its fill of complications that day, with the credit card systems being down for the first few hours of the event and more people to show up than anticipated, but the staff handled it in stride and did everything they could to keep lines moving and patrons happy. They even brought in pizza for customers from RC’s NYC Pizza and Pasta.

The brewery came prepared with a variety of beers, ranging in style to suit different palates. They even had a few beers from other breweries to help round out the offerings.

The first one I tried was the Motherlode Porter. It was rich with coffee flavor and at a nice 8% ABV. You could taste hints of fruity sweetness in the finish from the Ruby Port Wine.

In addition to that, I also had the Mass Appeal Pale Ale and the MIR Russian Imperial Stout, both of which were delightful.

I was able to chat with the Marketing Director as he was making his rounds talking with people and making sure everyone was having a good time. He was dressed in steampunk as well, so we posed for a picture together. I made it into a few candids as well that they brewery posted to their Facebook page.

The “tour” of the brewery was basically just a look at the different fermenters and an explanation of the brewing process. It was simple and easy to follow if you had no knowledge of the brewing process at all and with it being a small group, it allowed for questions and interactions with the brewmaster.

Overall, it was a great time. It got a little crowded, making it hard to enjoy more of their beers, but that’s to be expected for a major event. I look forward to visiting again and trying the new brews they come out with.

Cheers!
